The Main Ideas of the French Revolution and why it occured.
At the time before the French Revolution occured; everyone in France belonged to three separate classes. The first estate was the wealthiest one and only made up .5 percent of the population and owned 10 percent of the land, didn't pay taxes, and was made of clergy members of the church. The second estatemad up only 1.5 percent of the population and owned 20 percent of the land. Their jobs included top places in government, army, and the courts. The third estate mad up 98 percent of the population and owned 70 percent of the land. The third estate was very poor and they were treated unfairly. For example, the third estate was the only estate that paid taxes. And since the third estate consisted of mainly the poor, they could barely afford these taxes. Another event that started the French Revolution was the poor harvests. During this time in the 1780's, the country experienced a bad harvest. Because of this, food became more expensive as well as hard to get. This brought even more hunger to the third estate, who could barely afford food as is. On top of all of this, the country was also going through a time of great debt because of the seven year's war on the American Revolution. While the 1st estate was living it up and waisting the France's money; the 3rd estate were starving. This also caused France to become economically corrupt. This caused the third estate to rebel and start what is known as the French Revolution. All of these points played a huge part in the French Revolution.
